Measles outbreak declared on Merseyside

A measles outbreak has been declared on Merseyside. There are 13 confirmed and 16 suspected cases ranging in age from nine months to adults aged in their 20s. Six people, four children and two adults, required treatment in hospital. This compares to just one confirmed case on Merseyside in the first six weeks of 2011 and one in the corresponding period of 2010.

Update on Legionnaires’ Cluster Associated with a Hotel in Spain

10 February 2012, 1400hrs. The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has this week been alerted by the Spanish public health authorities about a further case of Legionnaires’ Disease in a UK resident who stayed at the Diamante Beach Hotel in Calpe, Costa Blanca, as well as two French cases. This brings the total number of UK residents associated with this cluster to 12, with three deaths.

This is a Training practice. From time to time fully qualified doctors join us for General practice experience. Medical and nursing students also join us, but you will be informed when they are with us. If you do not wish them to be present during your consultation, please tell the receptionist.

Nurses

Our practice nurses offer advice on immunisations, injections for foreign travel, removal of stitches, cervical smears, health checks, health advice to well people and general nursing advice. They offer appointments mornings afternoons and Wednesday evening.

Healthcare Assistants

Our Health Care Assistant offers a Smoke Stop Clinic and Fit 4 Life Clinic weekly. She also able to deal with basic nursing duties ie blood pressure, blood tests, ECGs etc.

The practice manager is responsible to the doctors for the smooth running of the practice. We are happy to receive helpful suggestions and deal with any administrative aspects of your health care.

If you are interested in starting or running a Patients Association or have any comments on how we can improve patient care and communication please contact the practice manager.

Reception

Our receptionists will try to help you in every way they can. Their job is often difficult and demanding. Please help them by telling them what they need to know so that urgent problems can be seen first. There is a room where you can talk to them in private. All staff will keep anything you tell them private.

Community Midwives

Your Midwife will see you during pregnancy at home and at the Antenatal Clinics and help plan and provide your maternity care.

Community Nurses

District nurses work with other professionals to provide care and support for the individual needs of patients who are confined to their own homes.

Health Visitors

A health visitor is a registered nurse who has received training particularly related to babies, children and pregnant women. Their role is to provide families with children under five years old with support and advice around the general aspects of mental, physical and social wellbeing.

Health Visitors can give advice on health to people of all ages. They regularly visit families with young children. Baby Clinic is at Goddard Park Mon 1pm-3pm Priory Road Fri 9.30am-11.30am, phone 01793 482860 for further details.

Many other professionals work with us at the surgery. They include a Clinical Psychologist and a McMillan Nurse. Your doctor will refer you to any of these if it is appropriate.
